How-To: Google AdWords Keyword Tool

Keyword Research is the foundation of any search marketing campaign. Whether SEO or AdWords, you want to target keywords that have commercial intent and high search volumes but low competition. There are many free/paid keyword tools available, but the most popular one is AdWords Keyword Tool.

Google's AdWords Keyword Tool gives you the estimated search volume, average CPC and competition for your targeted keywords for a chosen country, language and device (e.g. desktop or mobile). The tool even gives you keyword suggestions if you start with a broad keyword.

Still, based on our experience, not every advertiser knows how to use this tool correctly - some don't even know about it. In the example below, we show you how to use the keyword tool if let's say you offered corporate secretarial services in Singapore.

Step 1:
Sign in with your Google account, because you will have acces to more information like CPC.


Step 2:
Enter keyword ideas which are the most relevant to your product or service. In this example, it would be "corporate secretarial services" and "company secretary".

Step 3:
Select the location as Singapore, the language as English and check the box "only show ideas related to my search term", otherwise Google will provide many keyword suggestions it thinks are related.


Step 4:
Select the appropriate keyword match type. For AdWords, we recommend using "Phrase" because "Broad" is too general and produces low CTR and conversions, while "Exact" is too targeted.

Step 5
Under "Columns", select Competition, Local Monthly Searches and Approximate CPC (Search).

Below is a screenshot of the results produced by the AdWords Keyword Tool. You can sort them by, for example local search volumes, if you clicked on Local Monthly Searches.

Step 6
You can download all the keyword results or just selected ones in .csv format (Excel) to analyze, by clicking on the "Download" button.

Target the most relevant keywords (e.g. "company secretary") in your AdWords campaigns, while overlapping but irrelevant keywords (e.g. "course") should be excluded using Negative Keywords.
