I just came across a blogging for money seminar in Malaysia called “Wordpress Adsense Mastery Malaysia”. The enrollment fee costs from a whopping RM600 (early bird) to RM1,200 per person. Before you spend your hard-earned money, listen to what I have to say. Now, I’ve nothing against the trainers - I don’t know them nor have even heard of them before this. The purpose of this blog post is not to discredit anyone or any event, but my opinion and advice based on my personal experience as an Internet entrepreneur and online marketing consultant. Firstly, I’ve never heard about both trainers being big money-making bloggers themselves except that they were students of so and so. No offense but it would’ve been more useful if the trainers of a “blog for money” seminar was a proven, well-known and successful blogger like Sabahan, Ades, LiewCF, 5xMom, Paul Tan, Kenny Sia or Hongkiat. Even Internet entrepreneurs like Menj, Samsul or Gobalakrishnan would’ve been more relevant. Secondly, it takes more than “basic blogging” knowledge to make serious money and a one-time seminar is not enough - the useful stuff will come from your continuous learning and blogging experience. Thirdly, you should have a reasonable amount of technical skills and money for marketing. Other qualities that’ll help include good written English, time, effort, patience, persistence, attitude, curiosity, willingness to learn and most of all, a good knowledge of the subject you want to blog about. Let’s not start another boring blog about teaching others how to make money and insulting their intelligence with more Clickbank products. Fourth, although there are successful local bloggers, bear in mind that it’s a tiny percentage when compared to the 70,000,000 blogs out there - what are your chances? Fifth, making money online will become more difficult because of competition (and “noise”) from other aspiring probloggers. Frequent changes like a duplicate filter will bury your copied content in the search results or reporting paid links will result in less Text-Link-Ads opportunities. Yes, we now have Malaysian blog advertising networks like Advertlets and Nuffnang but did you also know a blogger like Ades made $0.40 a month from them? The bottomline is: The seminar is possibly a good opportunity to learn from people who can guide and hand-hold you if there’s a genuine interest to learn blogging. If you can self-learn (all successful bloggers do this), there are lots of free resources available on the Internet and many good webmaster forums to seek help from. Let me get you started: 1) How to install Wordpress? 2) Where to look for Wordpress themes? 3) How to find useful plugins? 4) How to optimize a Wordpress blog? 5) How to make money from a blog? 6) How to drive traffic, post content, etc.? For the record, I’ve never attended any Internet seminars or workshops before, apart from the two corporate ones where I was a speaker. Hence, I tend to be a bit skeptical especially when it comes to those teaching you how to make money. But having 1 million visitors a month on my blogs, websites and forum, serving over 700,000 Google ad impressions and consulting for public-listed companies, my opinions should hold some weight don’t you think?! Any problogger care to comment? Update: One of the trainers, May Ong, dropped by today and sent a message on MyBlogLog to inform me about her seminar - she DEFINITELY didn’t read this post. :p Update: Gaman a.k.a. Sabahan has given his views here and also included a link to an interesting review of eOneNet, a Malaysian Internet marketing coach. Update: here are 2 FREE ebooks on problogging from John Chow and Yaro Starak. I’ve never read them but they should be interesting coming from two successful bloggers.
- don’t blog for the sole purpose of making money.
- don’t think you can generate a massive income doing next to nothing.
- don’t think that it’s easy to succeed.
- don’t forget that there are better people out there who can also do the same.
- you can create a free blog at Wordpress.com. Or if you prefer to host it your own then buy a domain name, a budget shared hosting plan and download the script from Wordpress.org - installation takes 5 minutes.
- use Google or visit the Wordpress Theme Viewer page.
- use Google, see the plugins page or ask in a webmaster forum.

- see where successful bloggers are making money from.
- use Google, ask in a forum or learn from other probloggers.

not worth it to join the seminar, but the ’seminar’ is one way of earning money.. haha

larry,
thanks for the mentioned. i just put your link in my blog.
WTJ,
you are right. there is no prove that this seminar will help us. even gobala itself trying hardly to convince all his readers about his success.
one more, that RM600 is so damn expensive man!

I wonder who’s the one making now. I might as well spend that money to build my own customised blog template. lol!

Hi Larry,
I do agree on many of the points that you have stated, so I don’t want to go through them here again.
Looking at their website and the contents of the seminar, I feel that it would have been more appropriate if they have dropped the “Malaysia” word in their seminar title. Because when they use Malaysia, it gives the impression that, the seminar is somehow organized by the probloggers of Malaysia. I think “Introduction to blogging with WordPress” or similar title would have been more suitable.
I have not heard of the speakers either. So I cannot comment on their credentials. That being said, I think some people will still go to such seminars. Especially the ones that do not want to learn by themselves. Certain people learn better when someone teaches them.
Thanks for the mention Larry,
Regards, Ades

Thanks for the comments, guys. I’m not suggesting that the trainers are inexperienced or unsuccessful, or that they are scamming people.
I’m saying that their webpage seems to imply that it’s EASY to make money from blogging although the REAL probloggers know for a fact that it isn’t.
I agree with Ades, that the approach should’ve been more of “teaching you to blog” rather than “teaching you to make money”.
weirdoux: thanks for the add. :)

Thank you for showing this to me Larry. I’m still a firm believer that if one’s mindset is only on converting their blog to a money making machine, it eventually will not work out.
Old saying ‘Content is King’ has never been wrong.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll comment on this post in my blog. BTW. why did you link to Ades’s Nuffnagg earning update page to demonstrate a successful local bloggers?
Comment by gaman on June 20, 2007 at 11:44 am
Hongkiat: you’re definitely not alone in feeling that way, I think all successful bloggers do. Even John Chow’s book (I’m halfway through) has the same advice, i.e. you’re bound to fail if your intention to blog for money.
Gaman: thanks for dropping by. Regarding the link to Ades’ blog post, the seminar used the emergence of blog advertising agencies as a hardsell, so I was highlighting that that doesn’t necessarily convert to easy money for bloggers.

After so much ramblings have been said here, being a fella experienced Blogger yourselves, gentlemen, I think you should Give these Trainers a chance.
There have been Trainers who are unknown, like Albert Seah and Dechen Lau, and so on. The lists go on ….
Unless you can show us the $$ that you make, perhaps your critiisms are Valid.

wahlau….I didn’t know there is seminar on wordpress alone..I have attended a lot which are free about making money online….but wordpress alone and you have to pay for it
hmm…try wordpress.com for free..u love it get a hosting company and domain for less than 200 /year for start
Comment by Wahlau.NET on June 20, 2007 at 5:23 pm
Coco: my gripe isn’t about the credentials of the trainers - they could be successful yet silent (wouldn’t make sense now would it?) bloggers for all I know. But I’m concerned with how the seminar is implying that it’s easy blogging for money when most REAL and successful bloggers have warned that you’re bound to fail if you blog for money.
Wahlau:you had to start your comment with your nickname huh?! :)

You might want to hear Steven Wong telling his side of the story in the 2nd part of his podcast with Dr Rizad. It starts around 7 minutes into the conversation:

Good article. Larry.
Your points are valid and down to earth.
We have to exercise caution on spending especially during these troubled economy. People charge a ‘bomb’ due to the fact they are marketing something and need to be paid. Well, perhaps they say, their workshop worth the money.
Your tips here truly appreciated. And please keep it coming.
Sincere regards,
Alexander
