Why Is SEO Expensive?
"Expensive" or not is mostly a relative term and you need to consider the end result before making that conclusion. For example, if a doctor charges you SGD$50,000 for a 1-hour surgery but that operation saved your life, would it be considered "expensive"? Probably not because you can't put a value on a person's life.
The same goes for SEO. The primary purpose of SEO is not to rank high but mostly to achieve a higher sales:
SEO ---> good rankings ---> better exposure ---> more visitors ---> increased sales.
Hence, you need to consider your own business objectives when deciding whether to proceed with an SEO consultant.
A company like SEOmoz charges SGD$16,000 to SGD$80,000 per project and doesn't provide any performance guarantee - is that expensive?
Not if you are able to rank number 1 and get an endless stream of traffic. And certainly not, if the profit margins of your products are upwards of SGD$50,000 and 2 sales would more than cover the costs. But if you are selling, say mooncakes to local consumers, then you should re-consider your marketing options.
In the case of LarryLim.net, I received 4 SEO jobs and a few business offers in the first 5 months - apart from natural listings in search results, I don't market my services. Considering that the jobs have a value of SGD$10,000 to SGD$50,000 and above, I can safely say that my SEO campaign was money well-spent.
