How To Put Your Business On The Internet
This article explores what is needed to have a website in Singapore. It explains the 3 basic requirements - a domain name, web design and web hosting.
1. Singapore Domain Name Registration
Before you begin, you will need to a register a domain name for your website, e.g. abc.com or abc.com.sg, depending on the primary location of your customers. Registering a country-level (ccTLD) .sg domain name will help search engines determine your main location and include you for country-level searches, e.g. on Google Singapore.
There are many different types of global domain name extensions (.com, .net, .info, .edu, .org, etc) and ccTLDs (.sg, .ws, .my, .eu, .co.uk, etc.). Domain name registrations are usually subject to rules and policies, e.g. according to SGNIC, .com.sg ccTLDs can only be registered by a Singaporean commercial entity that is registered with ACRA, IES or a professional body.
My advice is to stick with a .com or .com.sg domain name for your company. Try different name variations or at worst, a .net extension if the name you want has been registered - this happens commonly due to domain name speculators and squatters.
You can register a .com at $10/year, while a .com.sg costs $40/year.
