SEO Tools

Here are some of the recommended SEO tools that I personally use for my projects:

1. Keyword Tool
Keyword tools help you determine what keywords to optimize your website for. Typically, you would enter the root keyword and obtain a list of permutations and the corresponding popularity for each phrase. You then analyse the competition for those keywords and decide where you'd like to compete. There are good keyword tools apart from Yahoo's
Overture tool, which was discontinued in 2006. You will notice that each tool gives you a different popularity number and which is not unexpected since they are only estimates. My advice is to use them in relative terms, i.e. how much a keyword is more popular than the other.
a)
Google Keyword Tool (FREE) - shows you trends and a comparison of search volume.
b)
WordTracker ($274/yr) - based on 300 million actual searches over the last 90 days.
c)
SEO Book Keyword Tool (FREE) - runs off Overture and other keyword tools.
d)
Nichebot (Paid) - runs off multiple keyword tools and adds their own interpretation of the results.
e)
Keyword Discovery (from $49.95/yr) - culls results from over 180 search engines.

2. Meta Tag Tool
It's often necessary to analyze what the competitors are doing with their meta tags in SEO.
Widexl's Meta Tag Analyzer does this job perfectly, and even counts keyword density for 1, 2 and 3-keyword phrases.

3. Backlink Tool
The next useful tool is one that helps determine your competitors' incoming links - where their from and the PageRank. For this purpose, there's no better tool than
LinkVendor's Domain Popularity tool, which lets you get incoming link information from Google, Yahoo or MSN, and arranged in order of PageRank.

4. Sitemap Tool
It's important to let the search engines now how often and which pages to crawl on your website using a sitemap. A simple free tool for doing this is
Sitemaps Pal, where you can easily generate .xml sitemaps for submission to Google Sitemaps and Yahoo Site Explorer.

5. Link Popularity & Search Engine Saturation Tools
Marketleap has 2 nice tools that help you evaluate your SEO campaign. The
Link Popularity tool lets you compare your inbound links with up to 3 choice websites and a list of other established websites. The Search Engine Saturation tool lets you do the same for the number of pages indexed by search engines.

6. Analytics
There are many traffic tools out there apart from your server's Webalizer or Awstats. One of the most advanced tool is
Google Analytics, which lets you set your marketing goals in addition to detailed statistics and fancy graphs. Simply copy-and-paste Javascript codes to pages you want to track.

7. Miscellaneous SEO Tools
A collection of useful SEO tools, from checking backlinks with anchortext to the strongest sub-pages to the top 100 competitors for a given keyword/phrase -
We Build Pages.
