Spam Statistics Asia

If you’re wondering why (like me) your mailbox is inundated with spam everyday, well, you’re not alone. MessageLabs, a Symantec company, recently published spam statistics in Asia Pacific.

How bad is the problem? According to the report, Hong Kong suffers the worst case of spam with a 92.3% rate, followed by China at 91.1% and Malaysia at 89.0%, while Singapore holds the fifth spot at 88.4%. What this basically means is that on average, you can expect a whopping 9 out of 10 emails you receive to be spam, i.e. unsolicited emails!

Hong Kong - 92.3%
China - 91.1%
Malaysia - 89.0%
Viet Nam - 88.7%
Singapore - 88.4%
Philippines - 88.3%
India - 88.0%
Indonesia - 87.1%

In a conversation with a web developer in KL last week, I learnt that unlike Singapore, Malaysia does not currently have any strict spam laws while international guidelines dictates that it’s NOT SPAM if you send to less than 20 receipients at one go.

Since it’s not difficult to schedule the automatic sending of emails at a fixed limit, say 19 receipients at a time, you can see that your spam isn’t going away anytime soon.
