SEO for Adobe PDF Documents

I have an SEO client who’d like to optimize their press release/media center page. The problem is the articles are in Adobe’s PDF format and not in HTML pages, due to copyright. Can Google even index PDF files?

This is an often asked question and the answer is “Yes”. Infact, Google can also search and index 12 other file types:

* Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf)
* Adobe PostScript (ps)
* Lotus 1-2-3 (wk1, wk2, wk3, wk4, wk5, wki, wks, wku)
* Lotus WordPro (lwp)
* MacWrite (mw)
* Microsoft Excel (xls)
* Microsoft PowerPoint (ppt)
* Microsoft Word (doc)
* Microsoft Works (wks, wps, wdb)
* Microsoft Write (wri)
* Rich Text Format (rtf)
* Shockwave Flash (swf)
* Text (ans, txt)

Interestingly, Google is able to pick a meaningful abstract from the PDF file and not necessarily the first block of text. Below is a comparison of what gets shown in the search results and a screenshot of the actual PDF document:

Hence, it would be wise to ensure that you have the proper keywords in the title (apply H1 markup) and in the first paragraph of the body. In addition, you should also edit the Document Properties of the PDF file:

Google sometimes uses the title in your Document Properties for the search results so make sure you use relevant keywords there. Make sure to also enter comma-delimited keywords into the Keywords field, i.e. keyword1, keyword2, keyword3…

And so my friend, this is how you optimize a PDF document. ;)
