I was invited by KnowledgeGroup to speak at a marketing conference at Sheraton Imperial Hotel (KL, Malaysia) last Monday. Aptly named Chief Marketing Office 2007 (PDF), the conference was attended by heads of marketing from various MNCs and local Malaysian companies. I was hesistant to go at first and for 3 reasons: Yup! Speakers like Dennis Susay (Yahoo’s Head of Marketing for SEA), Ramesh Natarajan (DHL’s Deputy Country Manager, Malaysia), Andrew Santos (Wyeth’s VP for Sales & Marketing, Philippines) and Anders Kager (Nokia’s Marketing Director for APAC). I went anyway and spoke about “Online Marketing”. My opening lines were: Still I didn’t fare too badly I think. On a scale of 1-5, I got 3.5 for presentation and 4.5 for content. In the end, it wasn’t about how many slides you had or whether you got the grammar right, but how much your audience benefited from you. And in the end, I had challenged myself and proven my worth among the marketing community when even TMnet’s GM for product marketing stood in line to ask me questions. I hope to add some photos once I get them. In the meantime, you can download my Powerpoint presentation below if you’re interested: P/S: if you’re wondering about the hotel, it’s one of the best I’ve stayed in. The room and service were excellent, and there’s a monorail just outside - the buffet lunch and breakfast could be better though. Total costs for 2 nights? Almost RM900! ;)
1) I had only 3 days to prepare my presentation
2) the delegates were senior people who’d paid RM1,500 each
3) the other speakers were very experienced marketing people
…Hi! I’m Larry Lim
…32 years-old
…Retired
And I ended with “…you’re all online marketing experts now. If you want a certificate, you can get it from me outside for an extra RM19.99″. Geez! What was I thinking? :)
