I think I may have missed out something in my earlier post on Nuffnang (yeah, I know I promised not to mention NN). I’m beginning to see that there are different groups of bloggers and it could be just a particular group that’s unhappy. So which blogger are you? It’s quite clear that those in Group 3 will be most sensitive to the change because those in Group 1 and 2 will blog at all costs. I have seen many Group 3 bloggers around - they post very poor articles, choosing to repeat what others have written most of the time since they don’t have a genuine interest. Most die off after some time. Now asked yourself: as an advertiser, would you choose a blogger who is blogging purely to make money? The obvious answer is a resounding “No!” If you seriously want to make a career out of blogging - forget about the money now. Write about something you truly love, grow your readership and once you start to get noticed, you’ll make money effortlessly. I’ve mentioned before that I have a forum with 20,000 members and we have grown to be a leader in our niche. I wrote an email to an antivirus company earlier this week to ask if they’d like to sponsor a contest and they agreed within 24 hours. But did you know that it took us 2 years to get to where we are today? Our sole priority in those 2 years was to help our members and we didn’t even show any advertisements to them. We only showed unobstrusive Kontera ads to guests so that it could pay for the dedicated server. So do you blog for money?
1) I love blogging and it doesn’t matter whether I make money or not.
2) I like blogging but I appreciate some money to subsidize my hosting fees.
3) I’m blogging to make money.

I’m in group 3!

Why would an advertiser not select a blog thats out to earn money? That blog can have very excellent articles and readership too. The main thing advertisers want is results. Hits and visits. Click through rate. It has nothing to do with whether the blogger is just blogging for money.

I think many blogs could fall into all three categories at the same time, but just because they are trying to make money doesn’t mean their articles are of no value. I have read many that offer sound advice, and are just plain interesting to read.
There are of course those that fall into your description of those in cat 3, but I don’t read those, like you say, they aren’t interesting. Scott

ignorantsoup: if I was an advertiser, I would be careful about where I advertise, i.e. associate myself with, because it affects my brand value. Also, a genuine blogger with loyal readers has far more clout than one who’s just repeating what others write and have fickle readers. In the former, I could get him/her to recommend a product and chances are his/her readers would believe what they read.

A blog can have the sole priority of making money, and yet be a genuine blog. It is not impossible to do that. They can be about a hobby they have, but their sole purpose is to get advertising money. Thus in this case, maybe there is a case 4..haha..anyway my point is that there has been successful cases of people who blog for money, and enjoy blogging at the same time.
